The jar

This is a 2-gram jar of Mangosteen live rosin from The Southern Press. I picked it up at Verified Wave for $100, on the same trip as the Gary Payton, and photographed both jars that same afternoon. Same rope-border lid, same plain label: 2g, Mangosteen, Live Rosin, 149–70u.

That 149–70u is the micron range the hash was collected between before it was pressed. It tells you which part of the wash went into the jar, not how good the jar is (how to read hash grades).

Rotten mangos, in a good way

It definitely smelled like some nice rotten mangos. That’s a compliment. Not fresh-cut fruit, but the riper, funkier side of mango, sweet with something a little off underneath. That funk is what made it interesting.

I didn’t write separate flavor notes for this one. The nose is what stuck with me.

A clean, beautiful jar

It looked beautiful. Lovely texture, and very clean. Like the Payton, it photographed pale and creamy, the kind of jar you want to open just to look at.

Solid, no couchlock

The effects didn’t have me couchlocked, but they were solid. That puts it right next to the Payton for me: a jar you dab for the terps and a good, usable high, not one that pins you to the couch.

Two Southern Press jars, one verdict

Both jars cost $100 for two grams, $50 a gram. The Payton won me over by tasting exactly like its name. The Mangosteen won me over with that rotten-mango funk and a beautiful, very clean jar. Two different strains, the same result: quality that doesn’t feel like a budget compromise.

I’d buy The Southern Press again, for sure.

OUTSIDE READING · NOT MY TASTING NOTES

A little more context

The closest outside review I found isn’t of this jar. It’s The Highest Critic’s May 2025 review of a Wizard Rozin Mangosteen, sold as 2 grams at 149–70u, the same cultivar name, size and micron range as my Southern Press jar. The reviewer describes a “pearlescent, near-white” jar with a “wet, stable, and super easy to scoop texture,” and a “dank, fruity aroma layered with some subtle raunchy notes.” They scored it 8.7 out of 10, but weren’t sure they could fully get behind the price. [MS01]

That’s interesting for two reasons. “Fruity with raunchy notes” is a different reviewer landing near my “rotten mangos.” And a Wizard Rozin Mangosteen in the same 2g, 149–70u format fits my understanding that The Southern Press is Wizard’s budget brand. It isn’t proof: a matching name and micron range on a label doesn’t show a shared wash or batch.

The lineage is unknown. The Highest Critic lists it that way, and the name is used for unrelated things. Perfect Tree sells a seed line spelled Mangozteen, listed as Peach Ozz × Cherrytini. [MS02] Olio entered a lemon-forward Mangosteen blend (Lemonge, Super Sour Lemon and Sueno) in a 2019 competition. [MS03] There’s no evidence either one is what’s in my jar. The name itself points at mangosteen, a tropical fruit that isn’t related to mango; my nose went to mango anyway.

One jar from one batch. No separate flavor notes were recorded. Effects are personal and potency wasn’t tested. Tax wasn’t recorded separately from the $100 total. The Wizard Rosin connection is as I understand it, not independently confirmed here.
